John Stockman - another over achiever and headed for the HBA hall of fame -
is only 5-10 and he like Jordan does it by work, work and more work.
Jordan many times not only is the top scorer in the game but is the top
rebounder. This is a game of giants where 6-6 and 212 is small.
My running mate in high school started running at about 10 years old as
rehabilitation from polio. John had little natural speed and had the
reminents of a mild case of polio. While most of us were out playing
baseball at that age, John was out running. He couldn't play games like
baseball or basketball because of the stiffness in his lower back caused by
the polio. But he could run and run he did.
With desire and a very good track coach in high school and training six
hours a day rain or shine, John won the state track meet in Indiana in the
mile for two years running (breaking the state record his senior year), won
the state cross country meet two years in a row and was one of the best in
the country in college at two miles.
I would venture to say that in every race John ran there was at least one
runner (in college probably most of the field) with more natural ability,
but 99% of the time they were looking at John's back at the finish line.
On our mile relay team (4x440) John ran the third leg and I ran the last
leg. With John running third, I didn't worry about having to make up
ground on my leg. No matter what place we were in when John got the baton,
we were usually in first place when I got the baton. That takes some
ability, but more importantly guts, metal toughness, desire and hard work.
