Most of us ride endurance because we're a bunch of masochists. This is
basically the definition of an endurance rider.
Actually, I ride because I enjoy the companionship of my horse, and of
testing my horse and myself against the elements....changes in footing,
hillclimbs, etc. Also, we get to see some glorious country that we probably
wouldn't otherwise see (albeit at somewhat high speeds for those who are
really competitive about things), and the fellowship of others who enjoy the
same kinds of thrills. I have found great people in every endurance camp
I've been to, and begun forming lasting friendships with several. These
people seem always willing to lend a hand where it's needed, even if they're
having an unlucky day. At a ride last year I had the pleasure of riding
several miles of the first loop with a lady whose horse ended up being pulled
at the first vet check. Since I am somewhat orthopedically challenged, and
it is sometimes difficult for me to trot my horse out after I've ridden for
awhile, this lady pitched right in and started helping me out. She was (is)
a true sportsperson. This is not an isolated story. The people are very
down-to-earth; the sport is down-to-earth. You must know your horse and
yourself, and the limits to what both are capable of in order to reach your
goal, whether that is a Top 10 finish or just completing within the allotted
time. It's just a great way to spend a weekend...
