Most pullers have either been traumatized or poorly trained. I have a
youngster that was traumatized and he will pull back for all he is worth. He
could easily hurt himself or others..so I tried this old trick and it worked
(also worked on a cantankerous old mare who was VERY spoiled):
Get a 20 foot rope (I put snap at one end) put around horse's belly, run up
through front legs and through halter. Tie to something and let him/her be.
This worked on BOTH horses....the first time they pulled back, they were
pulled against themselves, the rope tightened up on their belly and they
simply ceased to pull. After half a dozen times or so, they seemed to
"forget" to pull. For awhile I just put a rope around belly and tied
normally and since they "thought" it was going to tighten up if they pulled
back, they didn't. Refresher course may be necessary, but in the long run it
works...and it is safe.
I have also tried to stretchy tie ropes..helped, but I feared head/neck
injury. I think the belly rope trick works the best.
Good luck,
Teddy
