Sometimes the new tech stuff just lets you down...

Sometimes it doesn't!

I owned the thinnest-skinned Arab/Appy mare that ever lived.
Everything I tried galled her, especially the expensive mohair with
stainless steel hardware cinch I bought.

What finally worked (and what I have used for the past 3 years), is
a relatively cheap neoprene cinch, in combination with the Sport
Saddle. What may be significant about the SS, is that you don't
HAVE to cinch tight. The saddle stays put for me, even with air
between the bottom of the cinch and the horse.

I LOVE the neoprene-it cleans up easily and doesn't collect sweat
and dirt. A good friend of mine also has very good luck with a
wide biothane cinch-and she has a very thin-skinned mare.

Neoprene likely WON'T work if you try to crank it as tight as you
can. I did this once, on my spooky mare, on a long ride. At the
end of the ride I let the cinch down too fast-which caused fluid to
rush into the area, causing a raised bruise that took about 2 weeks
to subside. Now, I cinch snugly (mostly to hold electrodes from the
HRM in place), but by the middle of the ride I can see air between
the cinch and the horse. After the ride, on this one mare, I get
off the walk the last 20 minutes, losening the cinch hole by hole
gradually. Never any problems after doing that!
