mention it was wet, muddy and slick? It is a bad omen when a tractor has to
be used to get rigs IN camp before it even rains. 110 riders were entered -
not sure how many rigs that equates to but there were about twice as many as
we needed in that camp <g>-
Just ditto all this for the AHDRA I ride near Galena Illinois. There
weren't quite that many entries (about 70 for the 2 days), and everybody got
INTO the campsite, but everybody also got pulled out by Grace Ramsey and her
trusty John Deere on Saturday following the endurance rides. There were
rigs parked EVERYWHERE in the most inappropriate places.
Since all the trails, most of which are hilly, traverse the 6000-acre
area of the Galena Territory at Eagle Ridge, which includes three 18-hole
golf courses and hundreds of gorgeous homes (mostly belonging to
Chicagoans), it was felt prudent to reroute the trails onto 12 1/2 miles of
road (most of them not hard surfaced). Four times around!! The result was a
fast ride--3 hr 47 min.
(It was an IAHA regional championship ride with sweepstakes money involved.)
The horses all looked great at the end-- sound and with excellent recoveries.
Luckily the riding center, which was the headquarters for the ride,
offered an indoor arena for check in and a wonderful warm second floor
lounge for awards. There will be two more rides at this site, Northern
Illinois Challenge I and II on June 7 and September 6. The trails and the
scenery are GORGEOUS.
