Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to y'all with the latest on the ride I want to
put on in November.
I wasn't able to attend the general membership meeting of NJTRA on 4/5 because I was in
PA for a ride. Sandy Terp made the presentation. We have run into a snag in the form
of the club president who is adamantly opposed to having a 2 day 100 ride, he wants to
just have a 1 day 50 the first year. He has also put a number of stipulations to us, I
get the feeling he really doesn't want this at all! But, I do feel that NJTRA should be
involved, but, as I said before, if they don't or won't help, I'll do it without them.
He has requested a detailed written proposal to be ready for the next Board of Directors
meeting, on May 14. We must have all costs outlined, how much it will cost to feed the
riders, he seems to feel we need 70 volunteers so we have to plan on feeding that many.
He wants pre-registration of riders with a back out 30 days in advance if we don't have
enough entries to cover expenses. For those of you who belong to NJTRA, we did get him
to agree to put it up to a ballot vote of all members. We will be sending out a package
to all NJTRA members explaining what endurance rides are like, the safe guards used to
avoid over-riding the horses, what's involved, what's required of ride management - you
get the picture. That will be accompanied by a mail in ballot, to which we must have a
70% response (no less) polling the membership about whether they are interested in doing
a ride such as this, who will help and should it be a 1 day 50 or 2 day 100. Donna is
putting a short note about this in the next news letter while we work on the proposal.
My question to all of you who expressed an interest in doing a ride in New Jersey in the
middle of November is, would you still attend if it was only a 50 rather than a 100? I
have enough votes on the BOD to push this through as a 2 day 100 but would rather not
antagonize the club president and his old friends who will stand with him. I think that
may even happen if I do it without NJTRA, so maybe you can understand my concerns. I
don't want this to become a schism that tears the club apart.
On the other hand, I don't think a small number of people should be able to overrule the
majority. I have selected the dates of Nov. 15-16 for the ride. Heather Hoynes has
agreed to come down and be my head vet. Meg Sleeper will also vet. I have to get at
least 1 more vet to judge, maybe 2 if I have to have one be available as a treatment vet
if NJTRA is not involved.
In the meantime, any advice as to costs, number of people really needed to put on a
ride, suggestions, anything will be gladly welcomed. There is a lot of experience out
there among you so please, give us a hand? E-mail me directly, no sense cluttering up
the listserve with that information. I will keep all of you posted as to how this is
faring. I will be filing the sanctioning requests with both AERC and ECTRA in the next
week or so (taxes are finally over with!!) and plan on asking for sanctioning for both a
1 day 50 and a 2 day 100.
We will do this!
