Boy, did I learn that! Four weeks ago, going up the side of a
mountain, my experienced 12-yr-old endurance mare pulled her right
hind adductor. She was lame in the left front when we reached the top
of the mountain. Joyce Harman, DVM, diagnosed it, helped her lots with
acupuncture, network chiropractic, TTEAM, etc., and said keep up the
therapy (TTouch, heat packs, arnica, etc.) and start riding as soon as
she is sound. In a week we began light riding, and the only remaining
clue to the problem was a tendency to travel short in the right hind
on a tight circle to the right.

In the last two weeks she has been improving steadily and the only
sign of lingering trouble is her reluctance to hold up her LEFT hind
leg (although she held it up quite nicely for the farrier two weeks
ago). I mentioned this to Matthew Mackay-Smith yesterday and he said,
"Aha!! That sounds most likely like minor hip strain. Keep her out of
the bogs for another month. Be careful. Don't rush her."

Of course, we skipped the No Frills Ride and now she is very doubtful
for Biltmore (we had entered the 100). Heck, she is doubtful for the
Old Dominion at this point. Does anyone out there have any sense of
how long these things take to heal? Any additional therapies,
supplements, I should give her? Any and all ideas would be
appreciated.

Many thanks,
