Next weekend I am finally moving Mystery from his 40 acre pasture
to Pt.Reyes where he will join a small group of geldings in 1-1/2
acres. He will be quarantined for two weeks first in a < 1/4 acre
field, little or no grass. They feed one flake alfalfa in the a.m., oat
hay at night.
He is coming from green pasture grass; he will be stressed because
of the move, and he won't be worked much since I still cannot ride. I
broke my arm 5 weeks ago but expect to start riding in May. Should I
ask the ranch owner to put him on oat hay only and not alfalfa for the
first two weeks? Would there be less chance of colic? Is it ok to go
from pasture to alfalfa right away? Would it help or hurt the
transition of joining the herd and eating alfalfa in two weeks?
He is also plump (I mean fat, gordo, chub chub..right). We lost
conditioning during the winter with rains and then a hoof abcess, now 2
more months because of this arm. Of course, he plays in the hilly
pasture with the herd, but no weight on his back. So, I am back to
ground zero. :-( We will be starting slowly and include arena work and
dressage techniques / flexing stuff this time. I now have the entire
Pt.Reyes and Marin Watershed at my (his) backdoor to condition on. :-)
So, we may see some of you at the rides end of summer, early fall if
all goes well. And of course, I'll be crewing the Tevis and joining
the Steward's camping bunch(s) all summer. :)))
Have fun everyone going to the WSTF ride. Maybe next year....
Thanks...I'm still lurking and enjoying the good conversations and
vibes...

is that behind her back?)
