Richard:
About a year ago I had a lengthy discussion on C-serve concerning this
subject.
Many farriers will recommend this type of shoe not realizing that the horse,
when in an extended trot, will slide the feet up to 12 inches while landing.
Any thing that grabs will cause problems. That is why we use flat plates!
Yes, I have heard the need for traction and all that. Take some time and
reason out how the horse sets the foot down and then comes off of it and you
will see why I say flat plates. The foot, in endurance is not the same as
the foot in show classes or in the
so called events.
The endurance does a great deal of trotting or faster. The forward motion is
carried on down into the foot and as the hoof comes close to the ground it
is moving forward at a rapid speed. Look at the tracks when at your next
ride. You will see the hoof is sliding forward leaving a lengthy foot print,
stops moving(print at its deepest) and then the toe digs in (forward
impulsion) Rim shoes will hinder the forward sliding abut may help the
forward motion a bit.
Rim shoes also have a much less bearing surface to contact the ground and
will wear out much faster. All in all I feel you cannot beat wide web shoes
for endurance riding. (a lot depends on your farriers capabilities in the
ling run)
