Lovat and Rickets make an all-purpose or 3 day event saddle with an
adjustable tree. So does Thoroughgood, I think it's both in leather and
synthetic. The latter in synthetic is quite inexpensive. The former may
not be made any more. A couple of other women I spoke to found the L and R
had the same catch I experienced in trying it out-too narrow across the
seat, not in the twist but where my seat bones come. I noticed it was worn
right where it bothered me so obviously the former owner had the same
problem. Both the women I spoke to said their male partners loved the
shape and had no problem with it.I haven't tried the Thoroughgood but I
may! I think I've tried every darn saddle in two cities and two towns.
My horse is so sore that he's wringing his tail and bucking me off as I put
a leg over! I've never had this much trouble with any other horse/saddle
Interesting that it didn't show up when I was riding on the roads earlier
this spring I wonder why? Travelling in pretty much straight lines on the
road? Now we are working harder and almost every day? He's doing basic
dressage for the first time and having to use his back? One of the saddles
was a really poor fit and immediately did him in? Aargh! Too many
variables.
Tried a friend's sport saddle (and have tried a cheaper version-Circle Y?)
Felt very similar to one another on short rides. I must be too acclimated
to English saddles: don't like the dinky little excuse for a flap, and it
catches on the top of my boots; don't like the feeling of lower leg hanging
in space off the padded edge of the saddle-seem to have to move my leg way
in and therefore my kneee waaay out to give aids. Was hoping I'd love it at
first ride though I've read everyone's posts on having to get used to these
saddles. Why don't they make them like English or Aussie saddles?
Part of the problem is that I have developed some back troubles over the
winter and have begun to ride crooked. It sure affects the little gelding
more than the more substantial mare. Time to go to the chiropractor and
hope that I can be made straight(er) pronto. Time to call the horse chiro'
too, right after the farrier. So much for the May ride! Boy, this is
frustrating!
Does anyone out there know of a County Lane Mirage for sale, with a tree
one or two sizes wider than an F? I tried one out but it was too narrow
for the horse and too short in the seat for me-I need an 18" seat. I'd
also be interested in whatever the newer copy is of this adjustable-flap
style of saddle. The Mirages haven't been made for about 9 or 10 years.
I'm glad and sorry to hear others are having troubles with saddles, too.
I'm reassured that I'm not crazy and that it is hard to find a good fit!
