We use only selenium as an additive since it is very lacking in this area.
You must realize that we are very fortunate to have the pasturing
conditions that we have. Rabbit brush for browsing in the early spring when
it has some fresh snow on it, locust flowers a bit later, cheat grass (downy
brome) seed heads full of oil somewhat later and then cottonwood leaves in
the fall. When one of the mares has a headache (or uses it as an excuse to
the stud) there are willow leaves and twigs in place of aspirin.

All we rely on are the water (spring at 60 degrees year round) forage (
natural and grass hay) electrolytes (salt, block and loose as well as 12-12
free choice) and grain as needed to maintain condition depending on work
load.

Exercise, natural in the pasture and for those being ridden work in the
hills (ranging from 2900 ft elevation to about 6,000 ft.) Seldom work them
over 3 hours on the trail but those three hours are WORK. Mostly at a trot
up AND down hill, walk some of the more level spots (level means less than
5% grade).

Most pertinent to success is ATTITUDE. If you do not have it you will not
get it.
