First, I tightened the girth a hole (this is a string girth,
western style on a Sharon Saare saddle). I also dropped the
electrode down a bit on the girth side.
Second, I played a bit. Drake was sure I was nuts.
>From a trot, up hill, heart rate at 145, I went into a canter,
about the same speed as the trot. Drake's heart rate slowly
dropped from 145 down to 120. I went into a trot, and the
rate went back up to 145. Stop and the rate would drop quickly.
Then, I went from a walk to a canter. From a 80 rate, jump
to 100, slowly go up to 120 or so.
Then at the end of the ride, after 3 hours out, I did a mad dash
up and up and up, and got Drake's rate up to 180. He was blowing
when we dropped to a walk, but heart rate fell back below 100
real quick.
So, maybe the girth was a bit loose before (when I couldn't get
his rate above 104 at the canter). And he also seems to be in
very good shape and loves to canter.
It was beautiful and warm all weekend. Today we are in a snow storm.
