If you're asking how different feeds are categorized into energy feeds,
protein or forages...any feed with less than 18% fiber content and less
than 20% protein is considered an energy feed, examples grain, molasses,
oils and fats, the glucose boosters, etc. A feed with more than 20%
protein is a protein supplement, example soybean meal, linseed meal, fish
meal, etc. A feed with more than 18% fiber and less than 20% protein is
considered a forage, examples most hays, pasture, straw, A&M, etc. You can
get the majority of this info from looking at the feed tag.
This covers most things that you would feed a horse---anything else is
generally classified under vitamin-mineral supplements, but in most cases
these do not supply appreciable amounts of energy, protein or fiber,
usually just vitamins and minerals or some other sort of nutraceutical.
Hope this helps.
