The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sponsors an " Adopt a Mustang "
program where they make it possible for qualified people to buy a Mustang at
various sites around the country. They are holding such a gathering at
Frying Pan Park, Herndon, VA this weekend 21-23 MArch, 1997. If you haven't
heard about it, it is no surprise since the BLM hasn't advertised it well.

The requirements go something like this:

1. You apply by filling out a questionaire. This can be done on site with on
site approval. It's better if this is done earlier since by being pre-
approved you get first choice.

2. There is a discussion with a BLM rep to see if you are equiipped. It
seems that the key is a pen or holding area made of pipe 6 feet or more
high. In addition, you have to have away of unloading into this protected
area since these horses cannot be lead.

3. You have to be able to transport the horse by Sunday.

If you wish more information concerning experiences transporting, handling
and training these Mustangs, I suggest you contact Karen Brown at
410-549-0474 Home
202-512-7240 work.

There is a body of people who believe that the BLM requirements represent "
overkill {" and are unreasonable. Since there is not a lot of time, and if
you are interested, I suggest that you call.

We found out about this only because of an article written by Karen in the
Potomac Valley Dressage Association newsletter.

Pete Fields
