Is it possible to tell if a horse has a smooth trot just by watching them
move? Do you view from the side, front, back as it travels?

Minimal extraneous motion--up and down motion at the croup and the withers
for example. No "clicking" (interferance). Uneven motion from leg to leg--a
shorter stride on one side than the other, or a higher rise on one side or
the other. Too much action in lower leg. All the above are signs of
inefficiency, although some with exaggerated, inefficient gaits may feel
"smoother".
