After Ride Management

There are a couple of things you can do now to help you out
when the horse arrives. Find out what the feeding schedule
is, and get lots of food for the horse, exactly what he is
eating now.

When the horse arrives, post ride, let him have as much freedom of
movement as possible. You'll not want to let him out on the green
pasture for long. Instead, let him roam in a large dirt paddock if
you have one. If you don't even have this, take the horse on hand
walks for a day or two. Then pony him or ride him at a walk for
a few days. All you are trying to do is keep him limber. For the
first week, this is all he will need.

For the first couple of days after the ride, give the horse as much
hay as he can eat. You can keep the grain ration the same as before
the ride for the first couple days. After that, reduce the grain
ration, but do not eliminate it. It depends on how much grain the
horse is getting now as to what you will feed it. If the horse is
getting more than 3 pounds a day, I would cut it by half during his
rest break. Make sure that you get his grain and hay from your sister
before the horse shows up.

For the second week that you have the horse, if you want, take the
horse out for long slow rides. Go for a couple of hours, but keep
it slow. This will keep the horse in condition. Most horses figure
out pretty quick that rather than being on a hard training program,
they are now getting a slow ride. It takes Drake about 10 minutes
to figure out when I just want to go slow. Other horses may vary.
There is no reason that you need to "Keep up" the horse's conditioning
program.
