I am another gaited horse rider and am enjoying this discussion a lot.
I've seen some Rockies (tho' not at e-rides) and love their look.
I have Peruvian Pasos. One thing I adore about these horses is that they
have the fire and spirit of the Arab, but the tractability to make that
fire completely controllable. (Well, *usually*. :-) )
Problem is, my two specimens are unlikely to be sound enough to carry a
heavyweight rider for long distances. It's not the breed, just that we
didn't get these two with endurance in mind! So, my first LD ride will
probably be on one of my cousin's Arabs. I'll do it the "Arab way" for
awhile, but if the bug bites thoroughly I will go hunt for a really
strong, sound Peruvian to do 50s with. Or maybe a Tennuvian--there's a
ranch here in CA that's breeding some nice spotted Peruvians with an eye
toward strength and more size than usual for PPs. Gotta go take a look...
They are more expensive and that may put many people off. I will have
to spend $3,500-$5,000 for a well-started trail horse.
Why do I want to do it on a gaited horse? Because it's different! Not
the same as everybody else!
And yes, I've owned Arabs and half-Arabs and love them too....in fact
really wish I could clone a certain late chestnut Arab mare...still have
some of her hair and a tooth, is that enough DNA?
I hope to have time to comment more on this and related threads but not
enough time this evening.

and Picardia and Almendrado,
whose spirits are willing but feet a little weak.
