In regards to how I wrap the hoof with vetwrap:
I wrap the entire foot, leaving a lip of vetwrap around the bottom of the
horses foot, that way the vetwrap won't get pulled up and over the hoof when
the boot goes on. The important part is to keep the vetwrap covering the
sides of the hoof where the metal gripper plates are, and over the back of
the heel. It takes practice. Always keep some vetwrap and a string of some
sort in your pack with your easy boot. Make sure you don't wrap the vetwrap
too tight, leave it loose enough to get a couple of fingers in there.
The vetwrap will usually stick out of the top of the boot. You can either:
A) choose to color coordinate with your tack, or B), get a pair of scissors
and trim it down flush with the boot. :)
About the prongs. When I use the boots over shoes I will usually flatten
down the prongs. When I use the boots over barefoot feet I leave them
sticking out. My farrier wants me to wrap the foot with vetwrap to keep
Rocky's hoof wall from getting scratched from the metal gripper plates, and
that does the trick :). (he is barefoot)
The more you use the boots the more your horses feet will adapt. I just
read an article in the latest edition of Endurance News that pointed out how
great Easy Boots are for going thru sand.
Nikki in Fallon is smart for riding her horse in the boots before an actual
race to get the horse used to them.
