It is sad there are so many arabs lacking decent homes due to market demands.
Like Connie H. I wish I had a couple hundred acres to accomodate some of
them--but lets not just blame the show people wanting to make $ off their
prize stallion (and it is true--everyone seems to have a prize stallion) or
the folks with a little family mare who want to see a baby on the
ground--look to the racing arena for much of the oversupply of arabs. I
raced my own arab for one summer (long story) and was quite "into" the
racetrack scene that summer. I own two arab geldings--backyard pets even
when one is at the track!--and I like it that way. But every one else at the
track seemed to be a "breeder" and was trying to get as many babies on the
ground each year as possible--all looking for the next "Wiking" or "Monarch
AH" -----
some of the breeders were as conscientious as possible about finding good
homes for the horses they couldn't use---some were not.
Almost all of the Arabs I saw at the track were impeccably bred--most had at
least decent conformation--but there were so MANY of them, and I couldn't
help but wonder---all these 3 and 4 year olds are going to be 10 year olds
before long, and who will ride and care for them? Endurance riding is
growing--but not THAT FAST.
