The endurance ride started at 4.00 p.m. in very hot conditions, with the
first steep climb attracting a few casualties. Luckily the vetting for
this leg was just on dark in somewhat cooler conditions. The second leg
of 34klm was much more pleasant and traversed a large part of the
"prison zone" (the area between the two border fences which were built
to keep rabbits out of Queensland).
Brook Sample made it two in a row, riding his well known gelding Sharahd
Cavalier to victory, closely followed by current Australian Champion,
Mark Haigh on his new horse. Caroline Fitzgerald on Saruk was third
with fourth and Best Conditioned going to Martin Parker on Tracee Two.
First Lightweight and Best Conditioned was Anne Jones on Kim-Dane Tara.
First heavyweight was Noel Weisman and first Junior was Adrian Brinkley.
The ride was much easier than the one at Kenilworth a week earlier and
was very well run.
Everyone here is now looking forward to the next rides, once again at
Kenilworth at Easter when they have a choice of the marathon (320klm), a
40klm Training ride on Saturday and an 80klm ride on Sunday. Let's hope
the weather cools down a bit before then.
