G'Day Bruce! As a born Australian (Randwick/Coogee/Manley), raised in
England and Canadian for the past 30/35 years I was glad to hear a voice
from Down Under. I'm new to Ridecamp myself and enjoying all the "chat" and
discussions/opinions. But I'm not new to the sport although my Arab,
Phoenix, and I competed mostly in CTR'S for ten or twelve years. He's 24
now and today we went out riding in a snow storm. The horses had two inches
of snow on their backs when we brought them in from the paddock which we
brushed off and saddled up over terry towels. Phoenix led the way (bells on
the back of my saddle jingling) with his ears pricked forward breaking
through the snow for Jonno and Bari - a TB gelding and Morgan/Arab mare. It
was lovely even though our hands and feet were frozen.
I came over to New Zealand and Austrlia for 6 weeks in 1990 and had hoped to
get to see an endurance ride as I'd got a list from June Petersen.
Unfortunately, relatives I was visiting were not "horsey". Maybe I'll get
back again - wouldn't mind coming over for the equestrian events outside
Sydney and do an 0utback ride of some kind.
Anyway, none of this has to do with ridecamp and I'm off to have a long hot
soak and can't wait to really start riding again. I've been in the long
distance game since 1967. I think the first year for the Tom Quilty Ride
won by someone riding bareback on a stallion. The name escapes me just now!
Anyway, I'll be interested in hearing about the rides that you do once you
get your gelding in shape.
