glycerol as an "electrolyte"?

my boyfriend and i were discussing the use of electrolytes in
athletes the other day and he brought up the medical research the
army did with soldiers and glycerol. his flight physiologist was
also doing research on this subject. it seems that soldiers and
pilots who take this (mix a little with a lot of water and drink it),
and it allows the water to be held in the body as opposed to being
peed out, and prevent dehydration. i guess tri-athletes use it
often.
my question: have any of you tried this? on yourselves? and has
any research been done on its use with equine athletes?
