When I crew or when Kathy is crewing for me, our rule is faily simple.
Keep the water, hay and feed handy by not out until the horse comes in.
One way is to keep water in a bucket with a top on it or in a bucket with a
closed garbage bag liner. It is pretty disgusting to send time filling up
buckets, setting them out with hay at a vet check to come in and find the
buckets empty and the hay gone, because someone thought it community
properity.

Most crews will help on the trial with water, and they should. But in a
vet check, there is usually a water trough, and most crews (along with ride
management) will take out items to the vet checks for people riding without
a crew. All it takes is a little planning.
