. Volunteered to drag ride in lieu of paying >an entry fee.
I did this once too. I had assumed that since I was going to help the ride
and had been told that drag riders don't pay the entry fee, that I would
not have to pay. I was so surprised that when I went to check in friday
that I was told to pay the whole fee. So, okay, I did. Then the ride itself
was quite a story. Some local people (nonendurance types) entered the ride
without any knowledge of AERC rules and proceeded to ride as if this was
their own special picnic. I tried to explain about endurance riding as I
prodded them along. They just looked at me as if I was a kook. At about 4
miles out from the start they began asking if the vet check was coming up,
after all we had gone about 15-20 miles so far , right. Boy were they
surprized when I told them the actual distance and that we needed to hurry
up to make the cut off time. By the time these people realized that I was
really trying to help them it was too late. They just weren't prepared at
all and it was scary for me. They had a BIG girl on a 3 year old horse. And
they tried changing horses in mid ride. I brought all this to the attention
of the "ride vet". Needless to say none of these people finished, me
neither. I did get trailered to the end of the other riders 1 mile from the
finish to officially drag the rest of the 25, but it was a real frustrating
experience. These people didn't know anything and didn't want to know
anything. I was again surprized when my money was returned to me, not
because I had been dragrider but because I didn't finish. I'm still
confused on this one. Jane
