Tina,

I actually got turned on to distance riding from reading a book!

After I got out of college (& paid off the car & the school loans) I
finally had enough money to buy my first horse. At the time I really
didn't know what I wanted to do - I was never into showing & didn't have
any desire to be, but I'm a little too goal-oriented for just hacking
around. I had done a lot of trail riding, & thought I would get a
Tennesee Walker (rode them alot when I lived in North Carolina - nice
breed). Then, I saw a book in one of the horse mail-order catalogs I got
- it was Karen Paolo's "America's Long DIstance Challenge".

I ordered the book, and after I read it, said "This is it! This is what I
want to do! (I had never even HEARD of the sport until then.) So I
called one of the phone numbers for one of the organizations listed at
the back of the book - I believe I ended up talking to Jane Soule of
ECTRA up in Connecticut. We talked about the sport, & what kind of
horses compete, & who there was in my area who did this. And that was
the start...I ended up buying an Arabian & six years later I'm still
hooked!
