I too broke a finger, although it was a ring finger, not the middle one.
And like you, it was while lunging. I was trying to canter a green horse
when he slipped on the footing in the arena. All four feet went out from
under him, sideways. The rope coil pulled straight out of my hand with
such force that it broke a knuckle joint on the way. The poor horse got
up & just stood there trembling - scared him pretty bad.
I usually do hold on to the reins when I fall, although I can't say
whether it is truly a conscious act, or even whether it is a good idea.
The worst fall I had was when a horse spooked on me, and, being
unprepared, I went sailing. Since I had hold of the reins I did a nice
arc through the air and landed flat on my back, underneath him. I've
heard that horses will try their best not to step on you, but maybe he
didn't expect me to suddenly appear in front of his back feet. Anyway,
his back hoof came down right on my chest. It was one of the moments
I've heard described, where "time stands still". I was laying there
under that concentrated, crushing weight knowing that I would have to
wait for his other foot to pass over me before he could pick up the one
that was on me. I ended up in the emergency room, but was lucky. His
foot was centered so well on my breastbone that the weight was
distributed as much as it could be - didn't crack any ribs, sternum or
sustain any internal damage. The worst was the flashbacks I had for a
while, thinking that had his foot been 12 inches further he would have
come down on my face....
Anyway, enough of that. It didn't keep me from riding, I'm happy to say.
Somebody else please tell another funny story!!!
