Would someone out there please tell me how one can "hear" sand in a
horse's gut? I know all about soaking droppings (explain THAT to your
non-horsey relatives) to find sand, but one can HEAR sand in a horses
gut????
Please tell me how!!

YES, you CAN hear it! I hate to be an expert in this area, but our 4 year old
eatas EVERYTHING within a 5 mile radius, if it is moving slowly enough to get
her lips on it! Using a stethoscope, one can accurately osculate the midline
(approx) of the abdominal area, and one must listen for at least a minute in
most cases, since the intestinal activity can vary, and also it is rather
slow. You SHOULD here gurgling and well-defined swishing; if you here
something similar to the sound of sand washing up on the beach, you probably
have sand present. If you hear nothing, you have a different problem, but
that's another story. Have you had a problem?
