in my experience lack of gut sounds indicate that the gut has stopped
functioning properly. No movement. Several reasons, one of the most obvious
is colic. Gut sounds are always a sign that things are functioning normally
in the gut. Lack of gut sounds can be one of the first indications of
problems. If these indications are ignored, well you know what can happen.
If you are really interested in the hows and whys of equine internal
medicine, I'm sure your veterinarian has a variety of literature he would be
more than willing to loan you for a few days so you can read up. Most
veterinarians are happy to share their resources with clients. After all, "An
ounce of prevention..."
