because I am concerned that riders who are new to heart monitors, might
think that they are absolute, which they are not. Not even the thousands of
dollars monitors in my ER are absolute. Could Roger please comment ?

I'll comment. In every sport, the referees are there for a reason--and one
has to assume they're qualified. The electronic HR monitor is not a device
designed to arbitrate rulings of referees. A stethoscope and a trained ear
are certainly superior at the heart rates you're talking about here. The
initial "fear and loathing" of HR monitors was due to the possibility of just
such an incident. My advice would be: don't argure with the referee, based on
HR monitor data.
