Another thing to remember, using a heartrate monitor under these
circumstances--just because heartrate recovers quickly, it doesn't mean your
horse is not in trouble--blowing off excess heat does not push heartrates
much. A few points. The standardbred mentioned in a previous post had normal
recoveries throughout and after the workout.
The general rule is, if the horse is blowing like mad but the heartrate
recovers in a reasonably normal way, then the problem is body heat, which,
with the blowing, can lead to alkalosis.
