Standing at the starting line Misty will run at 110 to 120 so I pay very
little attention to the HRM for the first 10 miles or so. This is where
knowing your horse comes into play. I know how she feels and I pace her
based on that. I am actually more interested in how fast her heart rate
drops when we transition down - gallop to trot, trot to walk ,etc. - than I
am at the absolute at any given gait. When she is not dropping fast when
we slow down is when I slow down have the vet give he looking over at the
next check.
