steep hills and cantering.

Hi all,

I'm reading the posts about going downhill on a horse. I have to
wonder at what slope would the gradient be too steep to trot down? To
canter down?

I know horses need to build their muscles up in going downhill. How
can you tell a horse is conditioned enough for trotting down steeper
slopes or is this a "no" "no"?

I observed at the Ridge Trail ride (few endurance people were there),
that NO ONE got off their horse going down an extremely steep hill
(except me!). One lady even commented it was better for conditioning
the horse if I did not get off. I felt Mystery worked hard the day
before, was working hard that day (it was very hot), and I preferred to
be on the safe side and walk him down. People seemed shocked! "Is he
lame?" "Is something wrong?" The concern was appreciated but opened
my eyes to how the other "half" thinks!

BTW, as an extra note, I was reading the archives and some of the
advice I received on getting Mystery use to crowds and not rushing out
etc. etc. I followed a lot of that advise and as this season closes I
have the "calm" horse in the crowd, the one who behaves! The turn
around is amazing, the door was opened, I am very happy. Thanks to all
who gave me their great advice and all who have ridden with us this
summer and showed patience and understanding!

Happy riding to all!
