When I criticized AT&T's performance, I was referring only to the speed
of response and data downloads. My previous ISP in Alabama was an
excellent provider in this regard, and as I do a lot of downloading (and
am not known for patience) speed is important to me. But performance
(speed) is not the whole story for an ISP.
AT&T makes it easy to set up your computer for Internet access, and they
have local access numbers nationwide (good if you travel a lot). They
have a large Usenet newsgroup list, and they seem to get nearly all of
the posted articles (you'd be surprised how many ISP's don't). If you
don't need to host a personal home page, they could be a good choice.
Because I do need to host web pages, and want the fastest performance I
can find, I've subscribed to a local Colorado Springs ISP -- my new
email address will be jlong@pcisys.net. To top it all off, I may soon
be working full time for an ISP in Denver (mostly by telecommuting) and
have a Frame Relay (digital) line run to my house, in which case I'll
have yet another e-mail address!
