Pre Purchase Vet Checks

I'm hoping to get some discussion going on pre purchase veterinarian exams for
the purpose of choosing a horse which is, on the day of the exam, sound enough
physically to be a good candidate for Competitive Trail Riding. Would you
choose a vet any differently than you would for anything else; are some vets
better at this than others? Do you *always* request leg xrays or any other
test/specific
exam type? What do buyers do when they are considering a non local horse? Ask
for videos, sure, but can a "long distance" vet check be done successfully?
Is the vet hired by the seller (sounds compromising) or by the buyer; who is
the vet's customer? If this topic doesn't seem of general interest, please send
me private e-mail if you have opinions or useful information.
