The Quilty was held in Myrtleford Victoria, about 60 miles from the snow
fields (it was very cold - winter over here!) There were 240 entrants with
about 60% completion rate. The country was fairly hilly, as you would
expect. First leg left the base and did a loop back to base- 48 kilometres
through pine and hardwood forests. Second leg left the base and went to Mt
Stanley (800 metres , 2500feet above sea level) with snow predicted - 43
kilometres. This leg had the largest attrition rate , partly because of the
cold and the fact that it had rained a lot the preceding week - lots of
muscle soreness. Third leg back to base 43 kilometres through natural and
pine forests. Fourth leg was a different loop out and back to base.
The winning combination was Mark Haigh riding Rah Fire King (pure bred Arab)
in a time of 8 hours 14 minutes - for the terrain that's damn fast! Second
place went to Brook Sample (last year's winner) riding Sharahd Caprice (pt
bred Arab) in 8 hours 26 minutes. Third was Martin Parker riding Tracee Two
(ptArab) in 8:43, fourth was Caroline Fitzgerald riding Suruk (pure Arab)in
9:28 and fifth was Brian Keep riding Doran Park Nimbus (Anglo Arab) in
10:16. Top four riders were from Queensland, and the winning team was from
Queensland also. Best Conditioned Horse went to Sharahd Caprice, with Best
Managed Horse going to Suruk (heart rates of 40, 44, 44, and 42 after each
leg repectively.
