[endurance] Endurance Exloo - The Netherlands

The endurance ride in Exloo (Province of Drenthe) was a real battle in
the heat. Temperatures reached high 80's already around noon. (one week
earlier it was still realy cold - mid 40's and horses didn't have had
any time to get used to the heat).

5 riders started off for the 90 km (approx. 57 Miles) ride at 8:30h in
the morning. After the first 35 km 1 horse was pulled because of
lameness. The crew area was in the indoor riding arena, because there
was no shade outside, ride management thought this was the best
alternative. But it was just too hot and humid inside!
Even me and Bechir it took 10 minutes before presenting to the vet. Our
average speed at that moment was just about 11 km/h. (minimum average
speed was supposed to be 10 km/h.). Everything was fine and we passed
the vet.

I was not sure whether or not I was willing to continue. Bechir was
eating and drinking very well. While saddling for the 2nd part, his
pulse was 36 on the HRM. Very good!

We started off for the next part. But it was just sooooo hot! We moved
out for about 3 more km.'s and came to the conclusion that we would
better call it a day. We continued to see our crew (husband Harrie, and
Patricia and Omar who contacted through E-mail last week and who I
invited to come and have a look - excellent crew!) and told them we
would quite. They agreed and we all went back to camp. I had the vet
examine Bechir upon return and he was found to be OK. The vet
congratulated me on making the right decision!

1 more rider was pulled at 70 km.'s because the heartrate stayed too
high.

2 riders completed the ride. The winner finished at 17:50h (40 minutes
before maximum time) and the number 2 only had 25 SECONDS left.
(18:29:35!).
Both horses were fine! Congrats to Margreet Duinkerken & Happiness and
Rien Meeuwisz & Veskii (both horses pure Arab's).

On other distances (35 and 55 km) there were about 50 % pulls (most
because heartrate was too high and dehydration). More than ever before I
have seen many Rider Option pulls on Saturday. People are becoming aware
of what they and their horse can and can not do.

We will try again later this year (when it is not that hot!)
