[endurance] what does it take for 100 miles?

I'm interested to hear from some of you that have experience with 100's -
does it take a certain horse to be able do 100s versus 50s? I mean, can any
horse that consistently completes 50s be expected to be able to move on up
to 100s (all things being right - conditioning, age, etc) and do fine? Or is
there some extra *something* (besides good conditioning, soundness, etc)
that is required in a horse to be a 100 miler? I mean are there some horses
that just aren't 100 milers but do great at 50, for example?

contemplating possibly doing my first 100 this fall - this is from someone
who did her first *25* last year and swore every last one of you was insane
and I would NEVER do this again..... Now, I'm riding a little Arab in
plastic tack with a loose girth, tights, and all kinds of stuff hanging from
my saddle. I constantly think about pulses, tendons, beet pulp, electrolytes
and finding places to ride for 15 miles. What's happened to me????? Is
there a cure for this?

BTW, thanks for all the input on the HRM - got tons of opinions,
suggestions, and comments - now I gotta make a decision and order one - soon!
