The first ride of the Region 6 ride season is now history. I'm a little
slow to get the ride results posted but here they are. The Big Hill Lake
CTR was held April 13&14 near Cherryvale, Kansas. That is in the very
southeast corner of Kansas next to Missouri and Oklahoma. There were 41
riders that started the ride and 2 were pulled. The open did 25 miles
each day, (closer to 26, actually). The open were timed at 5 miles per
hour. The Novice and Competitive Pleasure divisions went 19 miles on
Sat. and 17 on Sunday. They were timed at 4 miles an hour. The trails
were great!! We have been having dry weather so there was no mud.
(unusual in this part of the country in the springtime.)
Management fed us all of our meals which, again, is highly unusual and
much appreciated.

They even had hot food with Homemade rolls and cookies at our lunch stop
which was out on the trail!

Steve and Priscilla Lindsey were the management team and they deserve a
great big hand for a job well done. Steve even ordered good weather.
Chilly nights and cool days. Sat. did get a little warm for my wooly beast.
At this ride we do things a little differently. We start out later in the
morning as we don't have the heat of the day to contend with, yet. They
even had ride briefing on Sat. Morning before we left. We were on the
trail by 9:00 It really makes for a leisurely morning.

Since there are so many awards at a NATRC ride. I'll not post the
results, but if you want more info. post me directly and I'll fill you in
on all of the details.

As I have always said, you learn something at each ride: I learned that I
was right in not starting out in open this year. I rode C.P. all last
year and have not had much conditioning time on my horse. So I thought
long and hard and rode C.P.; which was the right decision, after all. My
little horse did well on his soundness, but had some problems with
respirations and his metabolics weren't the best at the end of the ride.
Nothing really bad, just not perfect, and it did show his lack of
conditioning.

Until the next ride, Lucie Hess, Columbia, Missouri
