Regarding the need for aluminum shoes that hold up, has anyone considered
Titanium. This stuff is stronger than steel and as light as aluminum.
Only reason I haven't used them is cost - I am competing on a shoestring
budget and can't really justify (to my husband, at least) the extra expense
for something I have never tried. Poor old Star might need them some year
(or so I will inform Jeremy)...
Regarding feed, up to 30% of your horse's diet can be fat, such as plain
old corn oil. If I feel Star needs a bit more bloom in his coat and spring
to his step, I just whip out the ol' Mazola. This is a fairly low cost
alternative, if not a bit messy. He is a very easy keeper and large
quantities of grain are not necessary until the end of the year when the
workload is heavy and the grass loses its goodness.
Regarding rider clothing, riding jeans are the perfect alternative for
someone who needs the durability of jeans and the inseam protection of
breeches. Also, I have ridden in a pair of Ariats for two or three seasons
now and I love them! They are durable and cushiony. I ride in a pair of
narrow English stirrups without a pad and my foot never gets numb anymore.
As to Selenium, yes, it is very toxic but I do not know how to prevent the
toxicity if it is in your area, unless you can buy guaranteed feed from
companies with a known Selenium content and hay from Selenium-deficient
areas. In Ohio, we are extremely deficient and must supplement.
If I missed any current topics and anyone is absolutely desperate to know
my opinion, just wait, I am sure I'll get around to expressing it.
