CONGRATULATIONS to all the horse/rider teams that made the cut to the
Long List of 36 from a very strong field of 74 nominees. Everyone who
nominated is to be congratulated for having a horse talented enough to
meet the selection criteria and for setting aside other competition
opportunities in order to nominate to be a member of the United States Team.
During the Evaluation Period from April 1st through August 12th, the Long
Listed riders will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. This is the
period when each horse/rider team has the opportunity to show that they
are capable and prepared to compete at the toughest level of competition.
Each Long Listed rider will be observed by a Selector or a qualified
representative of the Selector at every competition in which a Long
Listed rider competes. The Selectors use the information gathered at
each ride to analyze if a horse is fit, sound, and if it is peaking for
the World Championship. During the Demonstration Period (from April 1 - July
22nd) riders must complete one 100 mile demonstration ride at weight (rider
with tack to be
a minimum of 165 lbs.). Soundness is probably the single most important
consideration and must be monitored closely during the Evaluation Period
 to select the squad.
The Entry List will be published on August 12th, which will be the top
twelve horse/rider teams and also the list of alternates who will step up
to fill spaces on the Entry List as needed.
 THE TEAM BEHIND THE TEAM
ORGANIZING THE SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS FOR THE 1996 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
 Pete Fields
 Road Crew Coordinator
A hall mark of USA Endurance Teams has been the well organized ,
well equipped, and motivated support provided to our riders. When
you consider the efforts involved from past events such as the 1994
WEG in Holland where over 80 volunteers paid there way into the
country to give competent and enthusiastic support, the thought
naturally arises " Well, what are we going to do for an encore." In
1996 our encore has to be better since we will be supporting a team
with 12 horse/rider teams and 12 alternates (vice the normal six riders
and horses). Although the Organizing Committee is making preparations
to afford gracious hospitality, we as the host team will be expected by
our contemporaries to take a lead in the area of hospitality. What I'd
like to do in this article is to discuss some of the tasks that need to
be accomplished both before the race and during race day. The structure
and organization of these tasks has been worked out carefully by our
Chef Dequipe, Mike Tomlinson. As background though here is what we
know about the physical arrangements of Dr. Jerry Gillespie's hard-
working Kansas Organizing Committee. The ride site is at a large 4 H
 camp, near Junction City, Kansas.
We will need to store much of our team equipment away from the barn
area either at the team camp site or in a separate area which has yet to
be arranged. At present, the particular design of the barn area does
not lend itself to some of the tasks that we need to have performed
such as bathing the horses. We are therefore planning to set up a
covered facility for the USA Team and we will of course need help to
both set it up and then to run it during our stay. We are planning a
team hospitality and social area near the barns so that all volunteers
and team members can have a relaxing place to call home in the middle
of a busy schedule. We will need good people to make this area our
" home away from home" as well as to keep track of the whereabouts of
 the numerous volunteers.
In all of our experiences, we find that we need people to gather
materials that are needed and to provide assistance where our pre-
planning has been faulty ( yes that does happen). The heart and soul of
our support arrangements has always been our numerous and well-
equipped Road Crews which afford refreshment and assistance to
horses and riders on the trail. We will need organizers to assist in
the assigning and equipping of these crews. It our goal to provide and
equip at least 15 autonomous , self-contained, support crews. We are
planning that most of the crews will have the ability to provide rapid
first aid assistance, if the rider deems it advisable, between
 veterinary exam stations.
If all goes well, we will again obtain sponsorship from Motorola
Corporation so that our road crews will be linked to our team
management through powerful, hand-held radio equipment, augmented by
a sophisticated group of repeaters. As experienced in Holland, we
expect that this will afford a secure and uninterruptable
communications system. The information provided by the crews will be vital to
the team
Chef D' Equipe and Veterinarian in providing for changes in tactics or
providing for the care of the horses at the Veterinary Exam Stations, as
well as means of keeping all of the volunteers informed as to the how
all of the horses and riders are doing. We know that Motorola has
committed to sponsor the United States Olympic Organizing Committee
and therefore their resources are stretched. We have come to depend on
high quality radios so we are also devising a back up plan in the event
that the Motorola sponsorship does not come through. Toward that end,
we will need Amateur radio operators as part of our volunteer force to
gain the capability of organizing a radio net.
The creed that we have operated under is that no rider, whatever
fate may befall him, will be unsupported on the trail. In short, if
there is only one rider out there , then there are to be road crews
ahead of him and at least one crew behind him on the trail until he is
safely back in the barn. Another lesson that we have learned over the years
is
that you cannot predict when all our horses and riders will be home
safe; so many of us must count on being on the trail for the entire
duration of the ride. There is not much glory in it and there will a
need for some volunteers to sacrifice personal desires ( like seeing the
the first rider to finish). We ask much of our riders in terms of
sacrifice, of personal riding ambitions, family absences, and financial
burden. We will also ask much of our support volunteers to contribute to
 a winning effort in Kansas.
As you can see, there is need for many different talents ranging
from the familiar Pit Crew to the unorthodox " Procurement Specialist"
(sometimes called the Scrounge). Perhaps you have a talent for
organizing, persuading, or just plain hard work. If so, the USA
Endurance Team needs you. It will be an exciting time; see you there.
If you can be a USA TEAM volunteer, please contact Chuck Gray (reference
 inside cover under International Committee).

 HEADQUARTERS AND TRAIL NEWS
 Jerry Gillispie and Kathy Yvorchuck
The Headquarters (Rock Springs Ranch) for the 1996 World Championship
will be divided into two parts, 1) The competition horse accommodations,
and 2) the spectator/festivities part. The Competition Horse
Accommodations will ONLY ACCOMMODATE HORSES OFFICIALLY ENTERED IN THE EVENT.
Stabling begins, Wednesday, 19 September 1996. The organizing
committee is arranging for accommodations at farms in the area for RV&s
and horses coming to the WC-E for the American Horse Festival and extra
horses that will be coming with crew and competitors for the WC-E. All
those associated with the USA Team please work with your Chef d&equipe
 regarding stabling.
No horses will be allowed on the Championship Trail except those
officially entered in the WC and those designated by the Organizing
Committee as trail monitors (unless otherwise approved by the OC). We
must be particularly careful in this regard because nearly all of the
trail is on private ranch land. Portions of the trail will be officially
open to competitors for pre-riding on September 14th.

 EVENT SPONSORSHIP
 Jerry Gillespie and Margie Burton
One of the obligations the USA/endurance community assumes when it has
the venue for the World Championship is to host the competing teams and
their support staff during the several days of the competition. There
are clearly basics requirements when hosting: food, lodging, some
transportation, and most importantly lots of caring and friendliness
(hospitality). The object here is to take good care of our guests
without being too extravagant or ostentatious (i.e. too expensive). There
are some minimal requirements for hosting set forth by FEI. To meet our
own expectations for assuring our guests feel good about their USA
experience, we think that we need to do more than the minimum. That
said, anyone who has entertained special guests in their home lately
knows it can be expensive. By now you have guessed where this is leading
 - We Want You To Be Part of Hosting This World Championship.
For over two years, the Organizing Committee has been working diligently
to organize the event and raise the necessary funds; with your help we
are being successful on both counts. Our biggest remaining challenge is
to raise the $600,000.00 needed to host the 550 guests during the venue
(Sept. 17-22). That's our minimum budget to care for our guests. It works
out to be a
 tax-deductible contribution of $500 from 1,200 people or $100 from 6,000
people (or some number of other combination of persons giving in support
of the event). Most of the money is being raised by Kansas companies and
corporations but this is NOT a Kansas race. This is a United States
sporting event and we need your help too. Contact us if you or your
friends can help. Call 1-800-892-9692. Thank you for being a supporter of
the 1996 World Championship/Endurance!
