Ken,
ECTRA stands for Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association. ECTRA
sponsors competitive trail rides in the eastern states from Virginia to
Maine, including limited, middle, and extended distance competitives,
endurance (single and multi-day) and drives. These rides are run in a
similar format to the AERC with the exceptions being that the comp. rides
are judged on a point system and items like splint boots and artificially
cooled water are not allowed. Most ECTRA endurance rides are co-sponsored
by AERC.
Horses are judged before and after the ride by a vet and lay judge.
Points are deducted from the ideal of 100 for deterioration in condition
during the ride. The horse with the highest point total at the end of the
ride is the winner (Grand Champion). Every horse that finishes is awarded
for completion and the top ten are usually awarded special recognition.
Members accrue mileage for rides completed. As of this date there are 85
ECTRA sanctioned rides, drives and clinics scheduled for 1996.
For more information or a newsletter write or phone Judy Lorimer at
83 Grotton St, Pepperell, MA. 01463 phone(508-433-2384). She is the
vice-president of ECTRA. Hope this helps.
