Carrying extra weight even 10 or 15 lb more makes a big difference with my
horses. I know this because their heart rates are higher when carrying just
these few extra pounds. It is not as noticeable on the flat or on the
beginning of a training ride but when they start doing hill work or they
have gone a number of miles I have noticed the heart rates are higher than
normal.
Forty pounds definitely makes a difference. When my husband (a heavywt)
rides my horse (I'm a lightwt) the horse's (who is quite fit) recovery times
are a lot slower and his heart rate is quite a bit higher on hill work or
cantering.
Anyone who wonders if weight makes a difference should go out for a run or
jog. Run a hilly course with a fanny pack that carries two water bottles
(full of course) then go out on the same course without the added weight.
