Look at the weight ranges used for TB racing. There individual pounds
make a difference. I remember reading years ago (so a some what faulty
memory may be in effect here) that each pound of weight was equal to
a handicap of a length or so of the horse. That's why jockies come in
small sizes:-)

In endurance riding, we are going nearly so fast, but the horse is
working hard for 50 miles. Each few pounds would make a difference.
