I thought I'd recently read that the patent expired on the original Gore-Tex
product. If
that's the case, then clones of the fabric may be available under another
trade name.

Also, when it comes to the need to keep Gore-Tex fabrics clean, I think
that's to
preserve the breathability. Dirty Gore-Tex is still waterproof, but behaves
like traditional rain gear.
