I have and do still trot uphill, even steep hills regularly. Given that
NATRC is designed to reward the unchanged horses, the ones that do the
ride with no visible effects it seems reasonable to me to have the trots
into P & R & the wait in the open,. A well conditioned horse ridden at
the regular NATRC speeds shouldn't be that close to a problem no matter
what the last minute stress was ont eh horse. The way to ride that is
figure out where the likely P&R stops are and walk for the mile or so
before you get to the mandatory trot.
