About riding the way your legs want to ride, I've noticed this type of thing in
my own body (and my horse notices my imbalance!) I don't think it has to do
with stirrups at all. It has to do with my overall body posture and balance. I
have a tendency to "twist" to the left which makes a whole series of things
happen and all of them are reflected in the way Warpaint moves. Since my
posture is goofy, when I ride the way my body wants to ride, Warpaint is also
twisted to the left because I end up holding on to him with my left leg (not on
purpose!).
It is seeing this in my horse that has really prompted me to work on my own body
(before it freezes into position in my old age). I have worked with Donna
Snyder-Smith for the last 2 years which has raised my awareness and improved my
riding tremendously. The centered riding techniques are very helpful for being
aware of how your body is moving. I also exercise more and do a lot of
stretching to try to loosen up and remodel myself.
So, when I ride the way my legs want to ride I cause my horse to move crooked
because its more than just my legs involved.
