[endurance] stifle surgery??

HI ya'll
I was not aware that you had to take a horse to get put under anesthesia to
do stifle desmotomy- We learned to do it witht he horse standing- just had
to extremely careful to be sterile as possible about it. I do know a mare
that had the surgery and had to be retired to broodmare status because of
it. So, when they tried to tell me my stallion needed it I said forget it-
because I had been doing 25 miles with him at home and he was fine. This was
at the racetrack and they thought it was causing his tripping ( apologies to
all who have heard this before!) however, now that I have ridden him at
several rides, I can honestly say that he is tripping because of sloppy
shoeing. The front inside of his shoe comes in and hits the inside of the
opposite knee (yes, he is slightly toed out but does not interfere
otherwise), causing him to trip. I have noticed it depends on how careful a
shoing job I do on him. At the track the farrier was doing him there- now he
is a goo dfarrier, but I don't htink he paid enough attention to Aly's way
of going. He just took down the toes and shod him all around. Anyway, this
is not the problem the horse in question has, but I am very glad that I
DIDN'T take the vet up on the offer to do surgery on him. He has very sound
genetics this way.
HOpe this offers a different perspective. I would exhaust all other means of
fixing stuff before invading ajoint. IF it becomes septic or the cartilage
is disturbed, you will end up a whole lot worse than before! I don't know
everything, but what about trying something like Adequan? I am still
learning about this stuff!
