I think that the vet friend was right in telling you that what you saw was
lymph fluid that had built up. It is not necessarily "bruising" per se - you
obstructed the flow & channeling of the lymph and it collected in the lumps
that you saw.

Neoprene girths are not meant to be "snugged up". The fact that you
obstructed lymph flow tells me that the girth was too tight. The girth
should become moist with sweat and "swim & slide" back and forth over the
skin as the horse strides. I have found that if I tighten one like I would a
string or fleece girth, I too have problems. While your saddle should not be
turning over as you mount, you should be able to comfortably slide your hand
between it and the horse & have it feel snug.

The only "cure" to the bumps is to allow the lymph to flow again. Loosening
your girth slowly will not make a difference if your girth was so tight that
it cut off the circulation to start with. (Harken back to the old myth of
leaving on the saddle for a period of time after riding to prevent "heat
bumps". NOW we know that the occur from pressure caused by an ill fitting
saddle!)

Good luck! Remember - if a neoprene girth is causing problems, try something
else. The perfect tack for one horse is torture to another.
