I enjoyed Nick's summary of the ride. I did day 3 and 2/3 of day 4. The 4th
day course crosses 2 mountain ranges, 60 miles, and it was rocky. The start in
the dark allowed me to see the sparks flying from the steel shoes on the rocks.
In some places the trail had cobbles piled on cobbles to form the surface.
These would move under the horses feet. I think the surface caused the high
pull rate. 8 out of 27 I think. I was one of them, pulling at the 41 mile vet
check. I was in good company as Rio pulled with a similar injury. I stayed at
the vet check and was driven out by Jim Bumgardner with the other non finishers
Becky Hart, Marion Arnold and Ruth Waltenspiel. Over 40,000 race miles in the
car. I just listened a lot. I second Nick's opinion of the ride and hope to do
it again someday.
