[endurance] Emergencies in the field

I want to thank all of you who have written back and
offered prayers for my friend Kenny that was critically
injured last week. He remains in a coma with C1,C2
fractures. A second MRI showed blood in the spinal
column, but they are not yet sure if it has been severed.
Needless to say, his prognosis is not good.

One local issue that came out of Kenny's accident was the
lack of protocol the hunt club had for dealing with an
accident in the field. There were several MD's on the ride,
2 of which gave CPR and intubated, however, when the
ambulance came, no one went with Kenny to MCV
Hospital. He arrived with no one to explain how his
injuries occurred, who he was, family to contact, etc.
Most of his closer friends who were hunting were in first
flight and had no idea that he had been hurt. Anyone of
them would have gone with him in the ambulance. Luckily,
one friend pulled out early and got word. She quickly
rushed to the hospital and was able to help with the
information the medical teams needed and helped contact
his family.

This didn't need to happen this way. I urge all ride
managers, club officers, etc. to consider how you would
have handled this situation if it had occurred during one of
your events.

Also of note, they did have a portable phone, the only
problem was that it was on first flight and the accident was
in 2nd.
